Ja, so ist es. In wenigen Tagen geht das Wired Earth Blog offline.
Die Gründe sind nicht nur die zunehmend unsichere rechtliche Lage der Blogger in Deutschland, sondern vor allem die technische Entwicklung.

Als ich Ende 2005 dieses Blog einrichtete, sah man die Ära der normalen, privaten Webseiten zu Ende gehen. Jetzt sehe ich dies wieder für Blogs in Deutschland. Genau wie die Web1.0-Sites, werden auch die Blogs nie mehr ganz verschwinden, aber der Weg wird wieder durch etwas Neues gewiesen. Microblogging hat bei mir groß eingeschlagen. Twitter, und vor allem Friendfeed, machen den Sinn eines normalen Blogs fragwürdig.

Deswegen werde ich eine "Zentrale" einrichten. Dort werden Friendfeed & Co. zusammenlaufen, und zwar nur auf Englisch. Die Domain und der Feed von wiredearthblog.com wird erstmal auf den Podcast zeigen, der weiterläuft. In wenigen Tagen wird das Blog deaktiviert, und bei mir privat gesichert und archiviert.

Wer meine Beiträge weiter verfolgen möchte, der kann dies auf verschiedenen Wegen tun:

Beste Möglichkeit: Meinen Account Friendfeed besuchen. Dort gibt es alles, und ich kann sagen, dass schon seit Monaten meine Microblogging-Beiträge informativer sind, als es im alten Blog je war.
Wer lieber Twitter bevorzugt, kann mich hier verfolgen.
Und wer den RSS-Reader bevorzugt, der kann meinen RSS-Feed abonnieren.

Vielen Dank, dass ihr mein Blog besucht habt, und mir lange das Vertrauen ausgesprochen habt. So ein bischen traurig bin ich ja schon. Es geht eine persönliche Ära für mich zu Ende. Aber, das ist eben Evolution. Auf zu neuen Ufern... Das Netz ist weit und unendlich.

Wired Earth Blog Closing Its Doors!

Yes, that's right.
In a few days, the Wired Earth Blog will be offline.
The reasons is not only the unsecure laws for blogger in Germany, but more the technical development.

On end of 2005, when I set up this Blog, I could see the time of normal private Websites will be over. Now I see the same for Blogs in Germany. Just like with the Web1.0-Sites, Blogs will never die completely, but the overall way will be set to another path. Microblogging hits me big time. Twitter and Friendfeed are taking the sense of blogging.

Therefore, I will start a "Central". There, my Friendfeed & co. will come together. The domain and the feed of wiredearthblog.com will be redirected to my (german spoken) podcast. So this might not have a real interest if you speak english only. This Blog here will be deactivated and archieved at my home.

If you want my keep track of my new postings and actions, there are different ways:

Best: Read and/or subscribe my account at Friendfeed. Everything will be there. For month, this have been my most effective place for my postings.
If you prefer Twitter, you might follow me there.
And if you use a RSS-Reader, you could subscribe the RSS-Feed.

Thanks a lot, for visiting my blog. You gave me your trust for years. I'm a little sad, overall. This is a chapter of my life, which ends here. But that is what evolution is all about. I move on to pastures new... the Net is wide and infinite.

I Blog, Therefore I Am... but where?

Where, and most important, how do you blog in 2009? Microblogging extends the way of blogging.

For me, it started in 2008. I made Friendfeed my main blogging platform, and integrated it a premier place in my regular blog. So, for long articles I still have a blog. And people keep urging on those microblogging services, that the time of blogging is over.
No, it just starts. It will change in 2009, but blogging is like shouting out your opinion. This never stops in a democracy. It only get new faces from time to time. From that point of view, the first bloggers were the ones who wrote and gave fliers to the people by hand.

Now, why is microblogging taking the power of normal blogs?

more effective - you can put out more stuff in less time
much easier - Write a short text, link a picture, and here we go
socialised = more audience
less legal problems

Lets take a look on the last point.
There are less legal problems on microblogging sites. Especially for some countries. First, you are not having a Website on that service. So, you are only responsible for a small part of your postings. Then it seems no one is bitching around, when linking/embedding photos or videos to a service like friendfeed of twitter. Try this at your blog, and the community will see your blood, when adding a "precious" photo to your article, unless it's under a Creative Commons-License. A big advantage for some European countries. The need of publishing you real (!) Name and address, doesn't seem to apply, and in fact, can't be applied at all.

All of these facts will help microblogging to get started in 2009. It's blogging without the hassle.

Resolutions for 2009 / Happy New Year

Here we go... 2008 is almost over. Approx. 12 hours and 2009 begins with fireworks. It will be a remarkable year for sure. Obama taking the lead, and the financial crisis keep on hitting countries around the world. But we all have our personal resolutions for 2009. What do you want from 2009?
There are some things I want to manifest in 2009. Attention, may contain some serious geek stuff :).

Found more than 500 Geocaches in total.
Buy the Android G1 as soon as it's available in real europe ;)
Making money on the web somehow
Keep cool on conversations in social networks. A real challenge for me.
Concentrate on the real important things (but how do I know which are?)
Don't write blogposts like these :)

Image via WikipediaAs an atheist, I celebrated Christmas like most of the people do, no matter what religion. It's not a "christian" holiday anymore. It wasn't for decades, for most people. But now I have found a way to be politically correct.

I don't celebrate Christmas/X-Mas (once upon a time the X stood for anybody, but it's another sign for christian stuff) anymore. I celebrate KISSMAS, or " :O-Mas ".
Go and kiss the one you like on these days. Go and settle down your fightings with a kiss. Stop forcing other persons your "will", just kiss them. Kisses all over.

Image via WikipediaThe Apple universe got a big shock yesterday. Steve Jobs is stepping in the background. Phil Schiller holds the last keynote on the MacWorld.

Yes not one but two shocking news. This will be the last keynote on the MacWorld. Apple announces that this is the last appearance of Apple on that exhibition. And the next shock was the announcement, that Phil Schiller is doing this last keynote.
After this the stock loses 6,6%, and media was spreading this news all over. Apple fanboys got shocked all over the planet, and the business news channels keep talking about health problems of Jobs.

Now the Internet is talking about, if Apple will survive that step. But Steve Jobs is not out of business. He is still there, so no one should be concerned. But this shows how tight the bounds are between the charismatic leader and the Apple devotees. Did Apple wrong in the last years of Jobs' comeback? Did the Apple community not love Apple, but Jobs? It sounds so silly, and it really is. But that's exactly what happened all over the community, which I can't stand at all. A computer, no matter from what company, is a tool, a thing for working or doing things you like to do. But it may never be your center of your lifestyle. If Apple loses it's products, you lose your life then. That is ridiculous.

I hope Steve Jobs is doing good, and do not have any health problems. I really do. But, we need to go back to the Apple in its beginning. With a team that makes good computers, and not crappy lifestyle gadgets with not much other use than show what new shiny, expensive things you have. It does money at the moment. But the actual reactions shows that having a cult, is not a reliable basis for a business.

Runes Of Magic Open Beta

On December 15th, a new free MMORPG called "Runes Of Magic" started as an open beta. I grabbed the client and already has build up my first impressions.

A new MMORPG sounds good. Free sounds even better. But can "Runes Of Magic" keep up with the hype on the net, and even in TV-Stations like Giga-TV?
First of all, let me remind you, that this is an early open beta run. There are certainely a lot of work to do. Some basic functions or behaviours may still be there in the final, but it can change any day.

I was hoping for a alternative to the paid MMOs like World Of Warcraft or Warhammer Online. But to make it very clear: I don't think that this game is made for competitions with those major MMOs. It's nice on it's own. That is a good thing, but unfortunately it has some intentions to be like WoW when it comes to the GUI and some behaviour. For example, you have to repair your weapons and armors. That is something I hate in WoW. It's just an unnessecary bullying of the players. On the other side, the windows that pop up on some items (e.g. recipes) look like the one from WoW, too. So it is a fact, what I see in the game chat, everone compares this with WoW.
That's too sad, but it justs provocate to, when you have just the bad things from Blizzards MMORPG. I hope the Team will change this for the final release. Please no durability for weapons and armors. It will lead to people not helping other because of the costs, or the trouble with repairing things.

The other site is the nice and cool manga graphics. I like that. The world looks good, the animations of the char is nice and good integrated. The quests are good and not to difficult at the beginning. The quest text needs to be more clear. At the moment there are not enough hints of where exactly you can find the things. I would like it to be like in Warhammer Online, where you see exactly the Area of the quest to be solved when taking it. The professions are made very well and it's the first time, I'm having fun at such a game learning a profession in the game. There are still some text in chinese language, and in the German version, you will still found many quests, which are not translated. But this will change soon, I think. The client crashes sometimes.

Overall, it's the best free MMORPG around. It has a lot of potential, and I'm continuing to play. It's fun even in this early beta stage. There is a lot, a lot work to do. It's not a alternative for WoW or Warhammer Online, but it's a good game on it's own. Best wishes for the team, to master the big job they have to do.

Gegen den Winter: Salz-Orgie auf den Straßen

Kaum wird es kalt schleudern die Gemeinden und Städte alles auf die Straßen. Salz im Überfluss. Da kommt wieder Vermutungen hoch, warum mutwillig gestreut wird ohne Sinn.

Umweltschutz und maßvoller Umgang mit Streusalz? Dieses Jahr keine Spur davon. In Massen liegt das Salz auf der Straße. Wie hier in Ludwigshafen auf einem Radweg. Teilweise 2 Zentimeter dick, ist es eine Gefahr. Darauf kann man böse ausrutschen mit dem Fahrrad. Es geschieht jedes Jahr wieder, doch seit es relativ milde Winter gibt, und keine großen Schneefälle in der Rhein-Neckar-Region zu erwarten sind, wird alles auf die Straßen gekippt, wenn es nur mal ein paar Flocken runtermacht, oder es mal nachts unter die 0 Grad geht.

Da drängt sich doch der Verdacht auf, dass man schnell die Lagerbestände loswerden will, damit man nicht umsonst die Steuergelder verschwendet hat. Eine Verschwendung sind die Salz-Orgien auf jeden Fall. Und noch schlimmer: Umweltschutz bleibt dabei offenbar außen vor. Die Belastung durch Streusalz ist allgemein bekannt. Was hier dann mit dem nächsten Regen in den Wasserkreislauf gespült wird, oder direkt in die Flüsse, nagt an der Natur. Selbst wer auf den Umweltschutz pfeift, sollte sich vor Augen führen, dass es seinem Auto ebenfalls nicht gut tut. Unterboden und Lack werden angegriffen, der Rost wird begünstigt.

Streuen ist wichtig und richtig. Aber in Maßen, an den richtigen Stellen, und eher weniger als mehr. Ein Tipp für die Gemeinden: Weniger Salz bestellen. Ein Winterchaos bleibt in manchen Regionen einfach immer aus.

Back on Ubuntu... for the Internet

Image by Voice Pictures via FlickrIt's typical me. I'm back on Ubuntu. But this time only for surfing the web.

Well, with the nwew upcoming laws in Germany, the data is no longer safe, when you use the web or email. With the right to break in your system and install trojans I looked for an alternative. But this time I keep my Vista system, which I like. It runs perfectly on my machine and it has all what I want.
But if a government will develop a "Bundestrojaner", it will be for Windows for sure. If they can. Some media doubt it, and I think they are not able to, by now., By now, but they sure will be able to someday if this law is on track. But it's highly unlikely that they will or can develop a trojan for GNU/Linux systems.
You could say that the government could work together with big companies to get this stuff in you OS. But not on GNU/Linux. The free software community would fix a "hole" quickly. Where anti-virus companies could stop acting against the governments will, the OSS developer won't.

But I will stay on Vista for other stuff. Or I will start the same circle again, which had spin me 4 times now:

Is the Android G1 Precise Enough At GPS?

Image via WikipediaNow, that T-Mobile in Germany has officially named GPS-Navigation as a main function, I would like to know, if the GPS in the Android G1 is precise enough for Geocaching and exact locations.

Normal car navigation system are generally not precise enough, or don't show the coordinates at all. For Geocaching, or very precise locations, you need an exactness of less than 5 meters. This can only be achieved with receiving a high number of satellites and support of WAAS/EGNOS.

Anyone knows if the G1 uses WAAS/EGNOS, and if the precision is better than 5 meters on perfect conditions?

Songbird 1.0 official release

Image by Lasse Havelund via FlickrWithout any sign in the media, Songbird is out of beta, with the final 1.0 release. And it changed a lot under the hood.

I tried this before, and was a bit disappointed. Too slow, too bloated. But this has changed quite a bit. Now it feels like a sleek app. Searching in the library is so much faster, it's like a complete new program. Also it's much more responsive using Songbird. The library function are as good as ever. Unfortunately still no CD import.
The path is set to compete with the big names. And not to forget to mention it can play FairPlay music and syncs with the iPod. I still prefer a real MP3-Player ;). And, while it depends on the mozilla engine(!) it's all open source. What could you want more from a music player?

Geocaching is addicting

Image via WikipediaIn June 2008 I found my first Geocache together with Moe. It's making more and more fun, and I even don't own a GPS device by now :)

Geocaching is a world wide game, where you got to a specific GPS position. There you normally find something like a log or even a box with trading items in it. Sometimes there are Geocoins that travel the world, and Travel Bugs that tag a item to travel around the globe.
At the moment I don't have a GPS device. You can't just use your car navigation. They are normally way to unprecise or don't even have a function to read the gps coordinate. You need an Outdoor device. But when the cache is in a town, or on a easy to find site, you might have chances to find the cache even without a device.
However, it's so much fun to find it. And you can make your own cache, by hiding one, at a nice and remarkable place. It's addicting. There are whole stores which sell Geocaching stuff, like capsules and logbooks.

I will get a "Garmin Legend HCx" soon, and then no cache will be safe from me :).

Image by ento via FlickrI didn't expect that. Yesterday I received my Playstation Home Beta-Code.

Great. I tried it immediately and created a character. There are plenty of fine tuning for the face etc. But after I went to the Home Plaza, I saw many chars looking all the same. There should be more complete different appearances.
So, I have a real nice house. Would like that in RL. If you walk around the plaza you discover a bowling center and a big video screen, where you can watch video. I'm pretty sure you will soon be able to watch real interesting stuff there or in your virtual home.

I'll go deeper into the functions this weekend. I'm sure this has a big potential and will have infinite possibilities, if the bureaucracy at Sony don't kill it all.

No Exploit in GMail

Now it's official. There is no exploit in Gooogle's GMail.

The news spreaded after MakeUseOf.com was hijacked and stolen by an Attacker. Gmail was blamed for having a security flaw, that allows to setup filters and forwardings.

Google says there is no exploit. The account was hijacked via ordinary phishing. Users of GMail can lean back, and the bloggers, who all republished the story without proof, should think about this incident.

Keine Sicherheitslücke bei Google Mail

Image via WikipediaJetzt kam die offizielle Nachricht: Es gibt keine Sicherheitslücke bei Google Mail (GMail).

Viele haben darüber gebloggt dass Google eine Sicherheitslücke hat im Mail-Dienst. Ausgangspunkt der Vermutung war MakeUseOf.com. Deren Domain wurde, wie einige andere, illegal übernommen. Angeblich war Google Mail schuld. Durch einen Exploit sollten die Angreifer Filter u. Weiterleitungen eingerichtet haben, um an die Daten der Domain zu kommen. Damit konnte man diese einfach innerhalöb weniger Stunden übernehmen.

Eine solcher Exploit existiert jedoch lt. Google nicht. Google Mail-Benutzer können sich wieder zurücklehnen. Laut der Mitteilung von Google kamen die Angreifer über gewöhnliche Phishing-Attacken an die Daten des Google-Accounts. Phishing Mails werden immer wieder, sogar bei Experten, erfolgreich eingesetzt um Daten abzugreifen.

Google Mail selbst hat aber keine Sicherheitslücke. Was mal wieder zeigt, erst überprüfen und dann bloggen.
